I want to know about the chips or ics available for the presence sensing or obstacle detection.Possibly low power and small in size.I am constanly searchin for those and in vain.Should be able to give digital output.

What exactly do you need them for?

Most of the times TSOP1738 does the job...search for it

What i found mostly is GP2D12 interfaced with OOPIC .I need it to be interfaced with the 8051 controller .Is there any interface available.Or should i go drafting a new one.

Start with LDRs first, IrLED/Detector , TSOP1738 and then think of GP2XXXX. It may take a day or so to decide what is best.
Those GP2Dxxxs are cute......but expensive!!
