Boost regulator function is nowadays relatively easy due to many ICs available which require few external components.

Almost always, they use an inductor as external component.

Almost every Semiconductor maker has these kinds of ASICs in their portfolio.

in all cases, the PCB traces should be as short as possible, atleast.

cheers!

Try the MC34063 8 pin ic, which is easily available. 6 components and you have a 1.5A switching supply ready. Even more current is possible with external pass transistor. Good load and line regulation.

voltage regulators are three-terminal devices that provide a constant DC output voltage that is independent of the input voltage, output load current, and temperature. IC voltage regulators are used in power supplies that hold their output voltage constant over a wide range of load variations
