what about using light sensor. When there is a hole light reflection will be minimum, and the light will pass through the hole.
Go for LED+LDR combination

go for tsop1738 and 38khz IR rays ... it won't have normal light effect ..

I implemented this in one of my robots

You can do it with a simple IR sensor based on reflection.

Too big, too complicated and generally unnecessary for such a simple job!

.....and the guy ( vallikranth) has'nt mentioned anything about how big or where about of the hole

hi,

I have used ir led+photodiode pair to control my robotic car using dc motor .

So try this.

10-12mm ldr and white led works fine
