Whatever contest you put related to Planetary Robotics, try to put a limitation on "Power" of the device/robot.

For example -
if the robots could be powered by wire -
You provide a Fixed Voltage source and measure the robots power consumption through the run-time.
Example - Say 12v, 40W average over 5min run is max limit.

this requirement could make things more realistic considering power limitations on other heavenly bodies. (eg. Solar panels)

Otherwispe people put a big honking Lead-Acid batteries and use in-efficient designs, trying to just get the "contest task" done.

(Also helps in energy efficient/eco-friendly design for planet Earth.)

cheers!

Since your title is mission to mars,
I would suggest having some contest on these lines -

1. Make a miniature tunnel support truss/structure using only Al pipes (of defined sheet thickness, dia) such that it can support 100kg (say) of a tunnel ceiling (of defined lenght x w).
The truss structure with min weight wins.

This tries to get a lowest weight design for a truss which could be "assembled" after being transported to mars.

just a thought..

cheers!
