i am building a grid traveling robot which traverses a square board.
could any one please tell me where do i learn using the l298 through my atmega 16 to control steppers?

Read datasheet man , everything is given in it.
Use current sense res of 0.5 Ohm, 10W
Logic supply should be = 5V
Supply voltage should be = 12V

then just give inputs and connect steppers. Even that circuit is given in datasheet. In that circuit ICL297 will be replaced by uC

could u provide me with connection diagrams to drive a unipolar motor using parallel port and L298N ?
also do i need a 2 power sources if i use L298N ?(12V for motor Vs and 5V for Logic supply ? )

How about you reading the Data sheet first..

your questions are really basic and are covered in the datasheet.. spend some time trying to figure out stuff by yourself ...

I went thru the data sheet . tried raking up my brains and soldered my wires directly onto the IC . However i only gave Motor supply Vs as i only have a single power source with me . My connections seem to be fine. Do i also need to give Logic Supply of 5V ?

How do you intend to give control signals for the stepper??

YES! you need to have a 5V supply.. you dont need a different power supply for that.. just use 7805 to extract 5v out of your voltage source...make sure you go through the datasheet of a 7805 before you use it..

the control signals will be 5v and not 12v.. because uCs, parallel port, serial port with Max232 can give outputs from 3.3V to 5V max...

I bet you didnt go through the L298 datasheet properly enough to ask that question.. The datasheet is pretty self explanatory..

To learn about robotics in India, your best skill should be "optimally using google"...

my bad .. sorry for neglecting the details .. but i am not even familiar wid d A.B.C of electronics.. inspite of that i have managed to build a pretty descent robo .. but one of the motors is drawing way too much of current .. and coz of that i have to use L298 instead of ULN2003 / 2803
