hi everyone
Iam a mech engg student interested in building a small scale prototype of a arc welding robot manipulator.Iam using a x y plotter system as the base with guideways.Iam using 15 rpm high torque dc motor shaft dia 6mm.I would like ideas on how to connect the motor to the slideways to obtain linear motion.The 2 bases are made of wood.

eg leadscrew arrangement,belt etc

@nitro1223: Well, you could use :
- A Lead Screw arrangement
- A belt and pulley drive (or Chain and Sprocket Drive)
- A rack and pinion arrangement
- A bell crank drive

for the last time!! multiple posting is not encouraged here.. if you have clicked post and it is taking too long.. then HAVE PATIENCE!!.. if you dont have patience to wait for a message to be posted on a forum how will you solve the problems on your robot later???

Attach a pulley to the shaft of the motor. The pulley must then run on the slideways of your system.

A lead-screw arrangement still needs a slider mechanism. The lead screw can be attached to the Motor shaft. The 'nut' can be fixed to a slide or wheeled trolley, that runs on the slideway.

The belt/chain drive is not recommended for mechanically accurate systems.

You are a mechanical Engg. student. Your text books give extensive details of these things. Read it.
Also, your Mech. lab has these built things. Just take the time to see and observe them. The Machine-shop technician may be a Dip. or ITI Certified guy. He is the expert to consult......
