Ive been into robots 4 a while but never studied things like how to build 'em or how they work. But i want to make a cheap easy robot as a start and have started studying them. Any tips??

you should read microcontroller basics.. and assembly language..

You first start with a robot and you'll learn a lot urself. Pls do ask in forum if u r stuck with something

After you decide what to do, it might be helpful to buy some readymade toy with a kind of base that you require. You can rip that toy off, and use its base. It saves a lot of time, and worth it when you are doing for the first time.

There are some nice tutorials in the site for controllin motor frm parallel port.and some very good tutorials for obstacle avoidance......using IR.
i think that are good for begineers

i'll agree with happy_99.
The best thing to do is to start ur own simple robot ASAP.
If u give us a theme[what u want to make],we can help u out better.
