I am developing some sort of multi controller device. It has two PIC microcontrollers (PIC18F4550 and PIC18F4680) can i use the USART for communication between the chips i.e. Can I just connect the RX of one chip to the TX of the other chip to do this? And can I use the serial data receive interrupt to read the data? At what maximum baud rate can i transfer the data? (The two microcontrollers just few centimeters apart as they are on the same board)

offcourse you can connect both the controllers tru serial port, and about baud rate , as much as both can handle in common.

usart can be connected directly between 2 controllers and via a max232 to a computer , see if you have the correct wiring done otherwise your serial port or mcu will blow up

Yes you may connect them dirctly. Since they are only centimeters aparat and probably on the same board, there is no need of a line driver like max232.

I personally prefer I2C bus for such communication

do u know how to implement i2c in a microcontroller like atmega16??

if yes then can u please tell me how to do it or any specific tutorials abt it?
