hi all

im building a rc vehicle jus wanted to to know if the circuit or method for calculating the distance travelled by the robot. also wanted to kno how to build an rf transmitter n reciever circuit.

1) mechanical geared meter like in old electricity meters or automobiles
adv- easy
disadv- will subtract any backward motion, friction

2) use encoder in wheels. count no of rotations
adv- electronic so no additional friction
disadv- not applicable for very high rpm, degree of resolution is less and depends on no of encoders used

3) design your system so that it knows in advance how much it is going to travel for each command given.(like micromouse)
adv- no additional circuitry
disadv- can only work if your robo moves in integral multiple of fixed step distance,no calculation for free movement of dc motor due to inertia.

4) keep track of time*speed
adv- gives most accurate readings
disadv- need very very high degree of calibration (as speed do not change lenearly with pwm duty cycle), no calculation for free movement of dc motor due to inertia.

choose whats suitable for you.
