I am planning to build a ps2 remote for controlling my robot's navigation in all directions but could not get a clear idea.

plan 1:
i can build it using a microcontroller. i have only the outer body of a ps2 remote meaning i would have to build everything.
so i can use 8 switches for 8 directions, when any of 8 switches is pressed it provides input to microcontroller. the mic would direct my motors via the l293d.
problem is how can just by pressing switch can i get mic know that input is being provided.can it be done using 555??

plan 2:
without microcontroller but HOW???

any help of any type would be appreciated.
please post any link you know as solution.

first thing

"mic" (should be) ->uC

OPTION 1

Without uC it seems to be difficult but not impossible.
You may need HT1d encoder decoder pair with RF transmiter
with Relay logic at receiver end

OPTION 2

USE PIC having built in USB port and implement Joystick HID means you have to use USB joystick but it needs uC

OPTION 3

Use 2 uC based modul one receiver and one transmitter. send data or command serially to receiver module and instruct it to do whatever you want
