The motor taken from a HDD is not a stepper motor i believe...It is a DC brushless motor...

You need a brushless motor controller if you wish to drive it...

@l41A: suhasm is correct. The HDD motor is a BLDC motor. This (clickie) (http://www.atmel.com/dyn/resources/prod_documents/doc8138.pdf) should go a long way in helping you. If all else fails, use this (clickie) (http://www.lmgtfy.com/?q=BLDC+Motor+control+using+AVR). ;)

Hope that helps,

@ debu

Is it really possible to control BLDC motors accurately using a low end AVR uC (like atmega8) ?

It would be superb if its possible!!!
I have several projects that have been stalled due to the expensiveness of a BLDC motor controller...

Its a shame that you get BLDC motors from CD roms for a measly 100 bucks, but u cannot use it bcoz the controller itself costs over 6 times as much....

And BTW , your blog is awesome!! :)

@suhasm: Yes, it is possible to contol a BLDC using just about any uC, by just using a few IRFZ44N MOSFETs and A1302 hall effect sensors.

@ Debu , I would be grateful if you could provide any link that explains how to do so....

It would be even better if you could give me a link that explains about the pin connections and timing diagrams for controlling a BLDC motor...

Hi all,
I would also be grateful to debu if he could give me the links.............

@akshay66, suhasm: This (clicke) (http://oretano.iele-ab.uclm.es/~mhidalgo/temas/Brushless/00857a_Control_PIC_esquema.pdf) should give you and idea of how to control BLDC motors.

Hi all,
I had previously also got an idea on how to control it, but, i was looking for a link whcih could give us the circuit & told us that how does that work.I dont have personal experience with them.If nothing more i would get an idea about these motors & ways of controling them.

ah...thanks....that was just what i was looking for..
Unfortunately the link has the code in assembly which i am not too great at...

oh well , anyway i guess i can figure it out given some time...
