for programming the avr uc, using usbasp programmer u need not use rx ,tx.U just need to take the 6 pins from the usbasp atmega8 ie
1.gnd
2.vcc
3.reset
4.sck
5.miso
6.mosi
and connect it corresponding pins for the target uc

Note :
Do not connect +5V of USBasp to that of target uC, if target is already powered up by some other power source. It may damage the USB port of the PC.

thanks for the replies. i have built the programmer and it is working great.
i know about the about the other pins. i just want to know about the tx and tx pins. so i emailed fischl and he told me that they are for serial debugging which is part of some other project of his.
