hey everyone!
ok, i am just new to microcontrollers...but read lots of ebook. i am going to buy AVR 40 Pin Rapid Robot controller board with atmega16 .. but in one thing i am confused what is difference between programmer and pc com serial link? is the second one needed? and one more thing if i buy a serial isp programmer listed there can i use a serial to usb wire externall to connect it to usb? will it work? cause the usb isp programmer seems costly! heres the link--http://robokits.co.in/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=6&products_id=12

please refrain from multiple posting...

Programmer will program your microcontroller... i.e write instructions onto the flash... a serial link is used if you have written code for UART/USART communication of your microcontroller with a computer or another board.... but in order to put that program into the microcontroller, you need the programmer.

Bottom line is, Programmer is a necessity, Serial link depends on how you intend to use the microcontroller.

I am not very sure of the working of serial to USB with the programmer as I have not used this product.

Serial Programmers like Robokits will not work with USB to Serial Adaptors. It needs real serial port. You may call them and confirm this if you don't belive me.
