I have come across many links showing how to hack a serial mouse to extract the wheel and detector pair but i have not seen a vivid description using the mouse circuitry as such

Is it possible?? I am using mscomm control in vb
If yes, how

Serial mouses are history and havent seen one in years. Try building one using simple Infra REd LED and detector , they should work fine too. If you want something more rugged you can look into slotted / reflective wheel encoders.

....the 'in' thing is to hack an optical mouse and use its components....
Don't worry, there are very few components, actually. Rip out a 100buck optical mouse and see!
The optical reflective sensor inside is a linear CCD camera that can be used as an encoder. But the effort is both hardware and software intensive.

Thanks
By the way i have already ripped two mice (courtesy my home junkyard) out of which one is working pefectly
The idea came to my mind after watching pranav mistry's demonstration.
Is it possible to use the mouse as such with its hardware

Yes, if you can make sure that the reflective beam falls only on the wheel, then you can use the mouse's output for encoding.

Here's your link (http://www.gurulib.com/_project/optical_mouse_hack_files/optical_mouse_hack.htm).

On the same lines something simpler in reference with pranav mistry , which you can do at home ... you need the Wii Remote though.

watch the guys other videos for simpler demonstration and explanation.
