What is it

It is a soldering iron that provides hot air at 200 -300deg temperatures .Used in surface mount soldering see pic of a surface mount IC http://www.electronics-lab.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/1199810948.jpg
New unit : 2.5K MRP

So guys dont be aftraid to do smd job at home !!! Practice a little with this and you will be an expert!

Nothing new there are many how to links on net .. but how to do it in india? read below:
Parts needed :
1 cheap soldering pipe shaped ,coil heater type:140/- like this http://www.hvwtech.com/products/206/44100_PV.jpg
1acqurium pump + air pipe :130/-
6 inch pneumatic tubing :30/- like this http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA280_.jpg
(my innovation
it withstands approx 100deg, at the coupling end the temp does not go v high).
Super glue , paper etc..
How to :
1.rip apart soldering iron, remove metal tip.
2.Leaving the front hole (where metal tip was there) cover the other holes with 2 layer of paper
put duct tape to make the paper hold. This is to prevent air leak.
3. connect air pipe to the 6" pneumatic tubing
seal the joint with superglue, put the other end of the tubing to soldering iron metal pipe. with paper as insulator.

4. Close the soldering handle with pipe and wires
mine is taped to hold together."Be careful not to short mains wires".My iron had fully insulated mains wires.
5. Plug in the pump and iron together.
wait 20 -30 seconds... check the temperature by burning some paper. Then try on solder.

More likely the duct tape will smoke a lil bit but will be over
after sometime, do it on a well ventilated room.

Test results :
Does very well in 1.5cm, this one crosses 200deg in 20seconds,I have tested with low melting silver solder.
Nozzle: I plan to add a nozzle to help pointing the hot air..metal nozzle is as easy as cutting a small piece of cheap
jotter refill .And fitting the piece.

enjoy the picture( temporarily bonded with duct tape and paper , the handle needed melting and fitting the air pipe,i got lazy to do it..will
plan someday) http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/1788/dsc01029o.jpg

Nice one. Why not use m-seal/clay to close holes ... should work well and will not burn. Paper becomes brittle and will crumble soon.

Why dont you blog about tit more pics :) ... will get you more views/reads.

BTW i have a Chinese one for 1100 bucks , that has temperature and air speed control. Though i dont use it much i recommend something with these basic features to everyone.

Thank you , i did the build quickly.... so dint search much .I used paper for :

-paper can be removed if trial fails, that iron was reusable
-cheap and fast

Great info with M-seal! I was looking for this type of info .............[There are industrial heat resistant glues but dint prefer as cost is more and need to buy in large,M-seal is best ]
I will try. Now I know we can do it so will make it permanent ..

Blog... comiiii...ing..............sure.....
Actually I am a lil short of time a few days .. once free will post a detail step by step.

This is small and works very well for hobby and small scale.

Air flow valve and variable temp i will add someday....
Flow valve i will make with plastics , Variable temp is just a BT136 triac circuit added to mains all in future.

Quickly made diagrams as how to do it type steps.

Step 1:
Step 2:

Process is detailed in blog :http://web-o-wikipedia.blogspot.com/2010/02/my-hot-air-pencil-in-rs-300-for-smd.html
