I have made the programming circuit from this page - http://www.pocketmagic.net/?p=375

the diagrams are - http://www.pocketmagic.net/wp-conten...a8-300x278.png (http://www.pocketmagic.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/atmega8-300x278.png) and http://www.pocketmagic.net/wp-conten...sd-150x150.png (http://www.pocketmagic.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/avr-bsd-150x150.png)
(I did not connect the resistors with the parallel port input. Is it necessary?)

I connected Atmega8 Pin 17 to LPT9, A8 Pin 18 to LPT10, A8 Pin 19 to LPT8, A8 Pin 1 to LPT7
I supplied the 5V and Ground separately.

I used both Avrdude and Ponyprog. But in both, it gives an error message "AVR device not responding"

I have to program this Atmega8 to get my USBAsp to work. :(

If you have any other circuit, please provide a link to it.

Make sure your connections are right, especially with the DB25 Parallel Port Connector pins. Its very easy to mistake the pin numbers and make the connections exactly the other way round.

The BSD programmer is quite a popular programmer. You should be able to get it working if you have your connections right.

Yeah..finally got it to work.

The mistake I did was I did not connect the Ground pins of the DB25 to the microcontroller since I thought that why should I do that if I am giving ground via my separate power supply. Once I connected the uC ground to DB25 ground, it worked well
