hello everyone

i am planning a project on an embedded server for applications like temperature monitoring and interdevice communication and want to interface a ethernet controller with a 8051 based microcontroller.

searching on the net i found certains options as :

1. c58900A ethernet LAN controller
2.RTL 8029AS/ RTL 8139C
3.using the Zilogs Z80Acclaim! Flash microcontrollers that have and onchip ethernet MAC 10/100 BaseT
4. Microchips ENC28j60 (stand alone ethernet controller with SPI interface) that can be interface to a flash mcu
5.LAN 91C111 10/100 Non PCI ethernet single chip MAC + PHY

frankly i donot have much idea about these and have never worked on networking applications .

what are the various ways of interfacing a microcontroller to an LAN/WAN?

please help me out with my project and suggest any material that i can read regarding the same.
thanks alot

My friends and i built a webserver using the ISA card ( RTL1089AS )

We had got the chip seprately but could not get is soldered ( also the board fabrication became a problem ) So we went in for a ISA based system .

But now you can easily buy an off the shelf network interface board which allows you server to interface to the network .

Anyhow avr is recommended due to many TCP/IP stacks are availible and the performance aspect .

I am also working on this type of project...
You can get the EDTP type board from embin.com but the price is more..

http://embin.com/products/Ethernet_Module_EM_121.asp (Rs 1700 + Tax..

but if one can make the board and solder the CHIP then it will come less than 400.. as the CHIP is only 225+tax.

Networking and Internetworking with Microcontrollers book is a very very good and explains all about this.. In india you can get this book in Rs 500+ .. I dont remember the price..

I have this book.

Also chk out the http://www.edtp.com/downloads
you will find many good things there...

Hey Vikas
this link is really gr8. I liked the proto board for the 40 Pin AVR uCs.

I am thinking of ordering few such boards at my local PCB maker. I have no idea how much he should charge.

If any one is interested please let me know.. i will order for them too.

I am also searching for the ATMega128 header board layout.. i have one ATM128. but as i dont have a header.. i am unable to use it..
