Hi, I have a small question about stepper motor.

As we all know, stepper motor can be controlled by step-wise motion. My wonder now is since the main purpose of the odometry or wheel encoder is to measure how much the wheel has been turning which we can deduce conveniently if using stepper motor, so is it necessary to build a wheel encoder system (such as the one uses black-white sections on the wheel) for motor system that utilizes stepper motor?

I want to hear from you soon based on your experience.

Thank you very much.

Yes, if you are using stepper motors and the wheels dont slip on the surface, then you donot need any kind of wheel encoder for distance calculations. The data you retrieve from your calculation of the stepper steps would be fairly reliable to give you very nice and appropriate readings.

dev's right.....
all u need to ensure is tat the whhel doesnt slips on the surface and the
coupling between wheels and motors r also error free...
both this problems u ll encounter in dc drive system also, so u need to take care of these conditions anyway...
steppers ll save u the trouble of using an optocoupler
