This is about the hovercraft which we guys are designing....What exactly is the principle of skirting the hovercraft and how do we go about it..??And we used a 500 rpm motor coupled with a propellor for lift....but the craft fell into the water...(its made of thermocol only...)What is the speed to be used for the motor..??Could you help us out on this one..?

Well....It must be around 850 grams(Rectangular piece of thermocol...)....And we used an aircraft propellor from a model shop...(A miniature one...)...And we thought of using plastic soda bottles for buoyancy....

    Hi,
    I asked for DETAILS!

 850gms is too much !!
You havent specified the Motor: dont know any motor that runs at 500RPM (unless it is a stepper) with out a gearbox (??)

The "Small propeller" should have some dimensions.
You need advice , you give details
    DETAILS have specific measurements.

I dont think anyone will help you here, if you are vague.

Well...Lets see....The prop. is a small plastic aircraft prop.(a 2-blade one) with each blade 5.5 cm in length....That makes the diameter of the prop. 11cm in length....And about the motor.....We got it from Richie street where the guy said its a 500 RPM motor at a rating of 9 volts and that it is a sufficiently high torque motor.... :?: ...This motor itself is quite heavy...And the body of the hovercraft is 30cm by 30 cm......And could we achieve lift by some other means....?? :?:

    Hi prani!
    Well, you've been had!!
    1. Like i said: no motor @500RPM, unless a gearhead is attached.

    2. The Propeller you mentioned will have to turn at 10,000RPM for any lift.

    3. It is unclear what type of propeller you have , its weight etc. So I cant comment on the motor needed.

    4. Is the 850 gms you mentioned the total weight with the motor??

Shit....I knew i had been suckered somewhere down the line.... ....And ya....The weight is with the motor on the craft.....well what kind of propellors need to be used for getting a lot of thrust...?Where could i find such propellors...??I guess i need to get back to the drawin board... ...Thanks for all your help and patience man.....

Could you please edit/ erase the first word in your post??
 i can understand your feelings.... but i dont like swear words in forums. So ...please??

OK Now for the Course correction: when do you want this completed?
Is this your college project or a demo' piece?
    1. For a 30X30 cms, the weight will have to be offset with some real powerful motor. The best way to go is to make a larger diameter craft.
Remember; Rule of thumb is -
*Large dia prop. slow speed with geardrive.
*Small dia prop, high speed , without gears.
*Lift is proportional to amount of air pushed by prop / sec

    2. Pull out all the motors from every RC car you see and try them 1 by 1.

    3. Import a Motor (Maybe ask Kiran parasa, AFTER I see it), but quite expensive.

    4. Think of the power?? Batteries are heavy! and you must use only Ni-Cd's

    5. Can you post a pic of the prop?

i am really happy to see that u are trying to make a hovercraft.

I recently built this hovercraft with surveillance capability for my course project. If u want any details i will be happy to provide. Just send in what u want to know.
