Default Where can i get SMD devices

    HI

The SMD bug just bit me..

I am Really new to SMD. I am designing a board for 16F873 (SOIC), TCN75 temp sensor and some I/O expansion slots, A motor driver etc.
The board is a general purpose board for robotics application. (Basically a programmable motor driver..... with some sensor electronics)

I got the chips from microchip direct, but now i need some resistors and capacitors.
I belong to kerala, and i couldnt find a shop which sells these..

it would be of great help if i could knw

    1) If they sell them (SMD resistors and capacitors and crystals and IR LEDs) in small volumes
    2) Pricing (very curious about this one)
    3) If i can get a dual H bridge in SMD package
    4) if so, the IC number....
    5) any specific issue that i might face when i work with SMD

and of course.. where can i get them...

    Thanks!!!
(Hope i didnt ask too much in one thread )

allbits, great to know that u r interested in smd components instead of the bulky dip packages. I am also interested in using smd components.

How r u going to solder those smd components?
Do u know someone who can do the professional quality smd soldering?
How r u going about with PCB design and fabrication for smd components?

I am eager to get started with smd components.

    Regards

soldering and designing wont be a problem... We can solder using that 12V soldering pen.. i just bought a temp controlled one.. cost me 750.. (enough for a beginner - weller will cost 15-20k)

soledring SOIC 150 to 300 mil wont be much of a problem if you practice. Buy loads of solder wick

Getting quality solder wire and flux pen can be a problem near my place. but i see a lot of ads in electronics agazines.. lots of them at blore and all other metros

PCB design can be done in ORCAD. i have never worked with other popular softwares like eagle.. so cant comment about them.. btw, the only diff will be the footprints..

Also, a hot air gun will be needed, but i am not investing before i get hands on experience.. i have already soldered SOIC 150 mil, didnt have much of a problem.. i used F=5mm lens.

    All the best!!

With enough practice, you may find that using the regular 20W soldering iron is better. (I discarded the smd soldering pen long ago.)

Moreover, for TSSOP pacakages, i think the 20W soldering iron is much better than thin pen, because you can create the solder flow effect.

I guess, in Mumbai, SMD components are commonly available on Lamigton Road.

    Another good site is www.smdin.com
they are located in chembur, mumbai, but i think they will send by post too.
    They may not have microcontrollers.

Also look at their SMD guide - somewhat useful for beginners.

    cheers!

hmm. It has been very long (few years) since i bought any SMD components from them. (smdin.com)
They also did not mind selling SMD resistors and capacitors in quantities as low as 10pcs ! (but now i hear it has increased.)

But now I think minimum standard quantity is 100 all over lamington road (Visha electronics etc...)

But ask smdin for maybe 50 or 20s ...maybe they would consider.

Also look at their beginner SMD practice kits and accessories.(small boxes, pcbs, etc.)

I faintly remember that R and Cs were about 25paise each (or less) .
Still i think 100 is not very high if you dont need a variety.

Minimum quantity of semiconductors is usually not an issue. pricing is similar to dip parts (or less).

I think you will get an invoice in email if you order, before confirmation..

Oh, and I still do recommend the thin soldering pen/pencil for beginners..considering that damage to smd pcb pads, and parts is always a concern.

    cheers!

I tried registering with smdin, but they are havinf internal server error 500

Anyway, i'll come down to mumbai if i cant get them in blore or coimbatore

    Thanks a lot anyway

just for an update, i just got the resistors and capacitors at cochin. (Roni electronics, MG road)They sell at small volumes- as small as 1 piece....

resistors cost me 15 paise while capacitors (they had only 100 pf, .1 and .01) cost me 1.10 rupees a piece

    Thanks for the link...

as for the latest update, I got all the components (practically everything) from blore.. That was a month back.. i forgot the Name.. They are specialised in SMDs.
