    This was never the case. You are not expected to open-source a application which uses a GPL library. But if you do modify the GPL code then you are supposed to open-source your modifications to GPL code. Your application using that library can still be closed source.

    @wizardjack

    Why are you misleading people if you have no knowledge in the subject.

    You can't use GPL libraries for non free software

    See this article on GNU PROJECTS page

    A very long discussion on How Microchip is selling a product that is derived from a GPL project is here

    http://www.embeddedrelated.com/usene...ow/91196-1.php

    well, deriving code from GPL GCC (MIPS compiler?) renaming mips-gcc to
    pic32-gcc and selling for 1200$ sounds like Microchip lawers either
    HAVE not done their homework, or that they have dont it extremly well.

    So or so, its really shame, that Microchip tries to sell MIPS GCC for
    1200 usd
    Yes they are selling it for USD1200 (More that Rs 50,000)

    Some people think they just renamed mips-gcc, added some optimization thats it!

    Becasue PIC32 MCUs (32 BIT) are based on mips core. So the base of mips-gcc can be used.

    I was Amazed by how big companies steal stuff from others while watching this TV Show (Pirates of Silicon Valley)

    http://www.amazon.com/Pirates-Silico...2803336&sr=8-1

    The PC Platform which was Originaly created by IBM was cloned by several manufactures legally ! The interesting point was how they copied the Original ROM BIOS.

    If you want to know more about GPL please see this TV Show
