Thread: CMOS camera module

    Default CMOS camera module

    Hi,
Any one tried using a VGA camera with a microcontroller(say atmega32)? This is not an impossible task as it has
    been done before http://amitpatil.awardspace.com/c328r.html#bookmark1

There are some UART camera modules

I tried looking for vendors but no serious vendors.

I tried using NOKIA 5130 camera but the pin diagram and the communication protocol was not available...:-(

Another option was to use web camera sensors. but again the data sheet and the interfacing was a trouble.

Anyone worked on a similar application? My requirement is very basic image processing 3-5 mins to process a 100x100 pixel image and no fancy stuff!!!

Give some more details about the application , the budget and some details regarding production. That would help get to a solution.

@asimov: I wrote a simple program to do some image processing on a microcontroller (binary thresholding on the red channel), using an mbed and C328 camera. The source is published here (clickie).

Debu, are you participating in the Mbed contest ?

    Hi,
I am looking for a simplest camera module which can give me minimum resolution of 100x100 B&W would be better (less proocessing power required). the communication with the camera module could be RS232/ SPI/I2C or any simple protocol.

This is not for any event but for a small image processing application project. The cost should be about 100 Rs or less(mobil phone camera 1.3Mpixel is about this price and I am lokking for 1000pcs). But for prototyping cost upto 500 Rs should be fine.

Do we get C328 in India? any leads other than alibaba?

@shobhitkukreti: I thought I might, but time seems to be slipping by me, it seems now I probably won't make the cut. What about you?

@Asimov: The C328 cost around 45, for your budget you should try something like the TCM8230MD, which costs around 7 a pop. It has an I2C+parallel data inerface, bu works with 2.8v (so you'd need some more electronics).

    Maybe this

http://cgi.ebay.com/640x480-CMOS-Cam...item414a7009b4 ( shipping is free if you can wait for air mail ). I usually ask them to fedex/dhl as its more timely. At 1000 Quantity you can directly get from China and like 1/3 the cost.

The same guy also sells high quality camera modules with appropriate lenses. jpg out will cost more , and have serial interface ... but 8 bit will not handle jpeg.

The problem is when you use mobile phone stuff the intelligence is in the uC in the phone. These require high performance uC's to be driven and be useful. So you might save on the camera but might have to put in a Cortex-A8 in there to do anything worthwhile.
